Short and Sweet: Locals
(and yard transfers)
Locals are nice. They're often slow and easy to photograph. They often have cool power, like Geeps - sometimes rare variations of the type - or SD40-2s.
NS 3414 | EMD SD40-2
A photograph I'm absolutely in love with. An SD40-2 leads an intermodal and hopper yard transfer with a GP59 trailing.

This was my first time at Allentown Yard (I was searching for a high hood.) It certainly won't be the last.

I saw this train while railfanning at Norfolk Southern's CP Burn in Allentown, Pennsylvania. I missed one train and saw 3, but somehow only got photos of one and video of one. Kinda botched that stuff that day, haha.

I was railfanning during the Coronavirus outbreak and had been waiting for quite some time. Finally this local came through with a GP38-3 leading long hood forward.

My first ground shot, I took this photo of an SD40-2 duo that had just switched some cars together and idled for quite some time in front of me. I got photos from many angles, audio samples, and more. I only regret not getting a timelapse of the sunset.

A duo of SD40-2s highballs past my railfanning spot. I welcomed their arrival after being at the tracks for a while, with nothing coming through. Fastest local I've seen to date.

Nothing like catching a unit that's less common than a heritage unit! NS only has 12 GP59's rostered!
EDIT: RIP GP59s. It feels great to say I've recorded history.

My fourth time seeing 3476, I finally heard it's horn as it led an eastbound local through CP Bethlehem.

I love when units trail as a DPU - you can make it look like you saw twice as many trains! Here's 3476 on my third time seeing it, trailing as a DPU on a westbound local.

Just as I was heading to leave, I heard the P3 horn NS 3457 has on it in the distance. So despite having put my filming equipment away, I photographed this EMD workhorse leading this 10+ car local solo into River Yard where it came to a stop.
